The Bible

Posted by on Nov 16, 2012 in Devotional, Rev. Serven, Theology | Comments Off on The Bible

What does the Bible say about itself? To me, this is an extremely important question because the texts that can be produced demonstrate the very strong foundation that our faith rests upon. In short, we believe that the Bible is authoritative, infallible, inerrant, inspired, and sufficient to answer all of life’s fundamental questions. Moreover, it is good for us to recall that these texts are God’s very own words and, therefore, they demonstrate the self-authenticating nature of the Bible. Here are a few examples of what the Bible says...

Theological Roundtable

How should the Church of Jesus Christ train-up new pastors for its congregations? The typical method that has been in place for many centuries is to send young men away to a theological seminary—where they are separated from their own families, separated from their local church leaders, and separated from the experience of “hands on” ministry. Instead of training them for ministry in the context of a local church, they are put into a formal academy that is far removed from the normal challenges of life. The problem with this approach is that...

Pastoral Internship

Posted by on Jul 24, 2012 in News | Comments Off on Pastoral Internship

On September 16th we officially begin our pastoral intern program at Covenant Family Church. After much preparation and planning we have selected two young men—Joel Stanton and Cody Winton—who will join us for eight months of hands-on ministry experience and theological training. Interestingly enough, both young men are from California. These two interns desire to learn more about what it means to serve God as future pastors. With this in mind, we will encourage them to test their personal call to ministry and to use their gifts in supervised...

Calvin on the Resurrection

Posted by on Mar 27, 2012 in Devotional | Comments Off on Calvin on the Resurrection

John Calvin (1509-1564)–always one for keen insight into the promises of the Bible–takes note of how the bodily resurrection of Jesus is also “a pledge” of the bodily resurrection for the disciples of Jesus. Therefore, Believer, as you contemplate the person and work our our Lord over these next few weeks, make sure that you also give thanks to God for the certainty of the bodily resurrection that is promised in the Bible for you. Calvin persuasively writes, “Now whenever we consider the resurrection, let Christ’s...

Heroes

Definition of a Hero: How would you define a hero? A hero is not a perfect person, or necessarily filled with moral perfection. A hero is not a Greek or Roman mythical champion such as those men you might find written about in Plutarch’s Lives of Noble Greeks & Romans. A hero is not a modern Sports great such as Kobe Bryant, Albert Pudjols, and Tim Teboe. A hero is not a superhero like Captain America, Spiderman, and Superman. Here are two simple definitions: A hero is “a man who exhibits extraordinary…greatness of soul, in connection...

Christmas Joy

“And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord’.” Luke 2:10-11 In his sermon on Luke 2:9-14 John Calvin proclaimed, “Since the angel invites us to rejoice at the coming of Christ, not in any ordinary way but with unbounded delight, let us make the most of the message. What can we say about this joy” If we involve ourselves in worldly pleasures and are wholly absorbed by our own wants,...

Mark your calendars NOW for the upcoming Men’s Leadership Advance (February 10-11, 2012). The speakers this year will be Dr. Joe Morecraft (from Chalcedon Presbyterian in the Atlanta area) and Pastor Marcus Serven (from Covenant Family Church). Our theme this year is is “Heroes: Why we must have them, and why we must tell their stories”. The simple fact is that God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary deeds for Christ’s kingdom. I’m glad that this is the case, because that means that God can use me and you to...
