Theological Roundtable

Posted by on Sep 12, 2012 in Events

How should the Church of Jesus Christ train-up new pastors for its congregations? The typical method that has been in place for many centuries is to send young men away to a theological seminary—where they are separated from their own families, separated from their local church leaders, and separated from the experience of “hands on” ministry. Instead of training them for ministry in the context of a local church, they are put into a formal academy that is far removed from the normal challenges of life. The problem with this approach is that “life integration” is lacking. In contrast, many...

Pastoral Internship

Posted by on Jul 24, 2012 in News

On September 16th we officially begin our pastoral intern program at Covenant Family Church. After much preparation and planning we have selected two young men—Joel Stanton and Cody Winton—who will join us for eight months of hands-on ministry experience and theological training. John Calvin (1509-1564)–always one for keen insight into the promises of the Bible–takes note of how the bodily resurrection of Jesus is also “a pledge” of the bodily resurrection for the disciples of Jesus. Calvin persuasively writes, “Now whenever we consider the resurrection, let Christ’s image come before us. In the nature which he took from...

Definition of a Hero: How would you define a hero? A hero is not a perfect person, or necessarily filled with moral perfection. A hero is not a Greek or Roman mythical champion such as those men you might find written about in Plutarch’s Lives of Noble Greeks & Romans. A hero is not a modern Sports great such as Kobe Bryant, Albert Pudjols, and Tim Teboe. A hero is not a superhero like Captain America, Spiderman, and Superman. Here are two simple definitions: A hero is “a man who exhibits extraordinary…greatness of soul, in connection with any pursuit, work or enterprise” (From: the...

Christmas Joy

Posted by on Dec 25, 2011 in Devotional

“And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord’.” Luke 2:10-11 In his sermon on Luke 2:9-14 John Calvin proclaimed, “Since the angel invites us to rejoice at the coming of Christ, not in any ordinary way but with unbounded delight, let us make the most of the message. What can we say about this joy” If we involve ourselves in worldly pleasures and are wholly absorbed by our own wants, we will never rejoice in the grace of Christ. Let...
