2021 Men’s Advance: Keep the Faith
Saturday, August 21, 8:30am to 5pm
Hosted by Covenant Family Church (OPC)
at the Family Vision Library
2020 Parkway Dr, St Peters, MO 63376.
“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” (Colossians 2:6–7)
The Men’s Advance is a men’s retreat, but more optimistic – we gather not to retreat, but to advance! The event is hosted by Covenant Family Church as an opportunity for men and young men to gather and learn to be mature Christians and godly leaders of their households. The Men’s Advance includes talks by our speakers, small group discussions, lunch, and a Q&A session near the end.
The Theme
Scripture calls the church of the living God, “a pillar and buttress of the truth” (1 Tim. 3:15). Part of our calling as the church is to guard and proclaim the truth of Scripture, to preserve the faith from error and believe it from the heart. This truth is our heritage, entrusted from one generation to the next. It is the glory of the church, the source of light and life, the means by which Jesus saves and disciples his people. Parents are called to preserve this truth in their families, teaching it diligently to their children.
This duty to keep the faith faces many challenges. As in every age, the world, the flesh, and the devil seek to distort and destroy the truth and lead people away from it. Our culture in particular encourages you to come up with your custom-made spirituality, piecing together whatever beliefs appeal to you. This approach discourages institutional religion, multi-generational continuity, and biblical instruction. At the same time, our culture also rather dogmatically asserts a certain view of the world which is contrary to Scripture, pressing society and the church to affirm and promote egalitarianism, homosexuality, secularism, etc.
It is vital, then, for Christians to understand the conflict, to know and hold fast to the faith once delivered to the saints, and to know and resist the errors that would pollute this faith. This will be the focus of this year’s Men’s Advance. Christian McShaffrey and Peter Bringe will speak about this duty to keep the faith, as well as what men in particular can do uphold the faith in their churches and families.
